Birth work is soul work.

The Founder

The Sweetgrass Collective.

Honoring Our Roots. Uplifting Culture. Supporting Our Communities.

I am a native of Charleston, South Carolina, where sweetgrass grows wild and proud along the coast. It’s more than just a plant—it's a symbol of deep ancestral wisdom. For generations Indigenous, African American, and Gullah-Geechee communities have harvested and woven sweetgrass into intricate baskets and other intricate designs—each braid telling stories of survival, resilience, and beauty in the face of hardship. Sweetgrass holds history. It holds medicine. And it holds us.

Sweetgrass Collective was born from that same spirit of community.

As a community midwife, lactation consultant, advocate, and healer, I teamed up with my community and we dreamed up this collective to reclaim sacred spaces—especially for Black and Indigenous birthing families. Too often, our stories are erased. Our traditions overlooked. Our births medicalized or pathologized. Sweetgrass Collective stands in the gap, weaving together traditional knowledge, cultural safety, and holistic care.

Our name honors African American culture, It's a call to remember where we come from and uplift Indigenous and ancestral birth practices. It means advocating for body autonomy, informed choice, and community-rooted care. It means creating something that lasts, just like the braided sweetgrass still being handed down today.

At Sweetgrass Collective, we believe:

  • Birth is not just a medical event—it’s a ceremony, a rite of passage, a community moment.

  • Supporting community means showing up with love and accountability.

  • We must protect Indigenous and African diasporic birth traditions by listening to elders, uplifting Black and Indigenous midwives, and centering culturally-grounded models of care.

This collective is a weaving—of stories, of people, of place, of purpose. Whether you’re preparing for birth, healing postpartum, or supporting others, Sweetgrass Collective is here to walk beside you. To hold space. To honor your wisdom. To keep the circle strong.

In the spirit of our ancestors, whose shoulders we stand upon, and the future generations we carry,

Welcome to The Sweetgrass Collective.
